Flower Guzmania - the beauty of tropical forests in your home (24 photos)

Gusmania or Guzmania is an evergreen that lives in the wild in wooded areas or on the mountainside of Central and South America, as well as in some parts of India, Brazil and Venezuela.

In the wild, the height of the flower reaches 70 cm, cultivated indoor species in length do not exceed 40 cm. Guzmania attracts attention due to its unusual appearance: long leaves at the base overlap each other, forming an unusual inflorescence. The main advantage is a long flowering period (about 15-17 weeks).

Caring for Guzman

To care for a gumman at home is quite simple. Although this plant is of tropical origin, no special knowledge is needed to care for it.

Required temperature

To ensure the desired temperature regime is one of the most important tasks. House plant Guzmania loves warmth. If it is preparing to bloom, the room temperature should be at least 25ºC. Already blossoming guzmaniya will feel comfortable at 20ºC. For a short period of time, this homemade flower can also last in a cool room (13ºC lower threshold).

Hypothermia can cause illness, and in the worst case, the death of the plant. Guzmania can die not only from the cold, but also from the heat, so carefully watch that the air temperature does not exceed 28ºC.

Air humidity

Growing guzmaniya should be carried out in rooms with high humidity: the optimal level - 60-85%, so the plant will feel great on the balcony in the summer. Kitchen is also considered an acceptable room for the hot season. In winter, a flower pot can be kept in the bathroom if there is a window opening. The dry air problem is easily solved by a humidifier.

Do not forget that every day you need to spray the leaves of the spray with warm filtered or distilled water. During this process, be careful not to let the liquid fall on the bracts. Otherwise, you significantly reduce the flowering time. Especially the plant needs moisture in the period of active growth (spring and summer). At this time, spray the leaves a couple of times a day: morning and evening. Please note that in the fall and winter only morning splashing is sufficient.

Feeding guzmaniya

Fertilizing this tropical beauty is necessary in spring and summer. It is at this time that the ghuzmania blooms and needs mineral and organic substances. You can purchase the necessary fertilizer in specialized stores. Choose special formulations for bromeliads in which there should be no boron or copper. Concentrate for dressing do 2 times less than indicated on the package.

Dilute the fertilizer in water and pour the obtained composition into the outlet of the plant, remove the excess with a sponge. You can also spray the mixture on the leaves with a spray. Fertilize guzmaniyu need about once every 3-4 weeks. Make a definite schedule in advance so as not to overburden the flower with minerals. If the plant does not stop blooming for several months and there is no darkening on the leaves, then it does not need additional fertilizing and you can refrain from using fertilizers.

After reading how to care for Guzman, you had to make sure that this island of exotic does not require much attention. It is enough to pick a flower a comfortable place and do not forget to water it regularly.

Transplant rules

After buying this tropical miracle, many people have a question: how to transplant guzmania correctly so as not to harm it? This procedure is simple and will only need to be performed once. Since the root system of the plant develops extremely slowly, the flower lives quietly in the same pot for years. The process of transplanting from a pot to a permanent pot should begin with the preparation of the soil mixture. You can purchase a special blend for bromeliads or use a primer for ferns or orchids. The substrate should be permeable to acidity in the range of 5.5-7.

Breeding guzmanii

The reproduction of this plant mainly occurs through division. During flowering, the mother plant forms a new root system. These side shoots at the base are called "kids." Over time, the processes become full-fledged bushes. The maternal rosette dies off when the plant stops blooming. As soon as the roots of the "babies" reach one and a half centimeters in length, they are separated with a sharp knife from the "parent".

Most often, a tropical beauty gives one "baby", but there are times when she dies not immediately after flowering and continues to give birth. Since the roots of all processes cannot be formed simultaneously, it is not possible to transplant them at one time. If necessary, cut off the shoots and place them in temporary pots. To increase the humidity of the air, which is necessary for growing bushes, build a polyethylene cap. When the process becomes at least 15 cm tall and its outlet is formed, it can be transplanted into a permanent pot.

For reproduction of this exotic flower, you can use seeds. They are pre-washed in a solution of potassium permanganate, dried well, and then sown on the surface of a special soil for bromeliads.

It is not necessary to bury the seeds in the ground, as they must germinate in the sunlight, but you need to cover the pot with film or glass. The required temperature in the room is 22-24ºC. If the seeds start to dry out, they should be sprayed with warm water.

The first shoots will appear in 2-3 weeks. After six months, young plants can be planted in permanent flowerpots. Please note that such Guzmania will not bloom soon: at least in three years.

Flowering is the culminating process in the life of this plant, which lasts for several months (usually from March to September), but the flowers appear only when it is comfortable. If it does not bloom, then you make some mistakes with care.

Why the long-awaited moment does not come:

  • Due to a lack or, on the contrary, an overabundance of sunlight;
  • Due to the lack of beneficial substances;
  • Due to excessive dry air.

Correct these shortcomings, and the plant will delight you with the magnificence of its inflorescences. Depending on the variety, they can be rich red, purple, orange or bright yellow.

Guzmania gives its beauty only once and is considered an annual plant, but it may take more than one year to await this event. To stimulate this process, some specially saturate the air with ethylene. This is easy to do: just put apple slices on the tray. Rotting fruit will release the desired substance. Just make sure that there is no mold on the surface of the apples: because of it, an exotic bush can get sick.
